Legal and policies

These policies cover the Bracton website and product, operated by Bracton Ltd. Questions go to hello@bractonlegal.co.uk.

Company particulars

Bracton Ltd is registered in England and Wales under company number 17360622. Its registered office is at Arden Hall, Brooklands Road, Sale, M33 3SJ.

These particulars appear here rather than in the footer of every page. Regulation 25 of the Company, Limited Liability Partnership and Business (Names and Trading Disclosures) Regulations 2015 requires a company to disclose the part of the United Kingdom in which it is registered, its registered number and the address of its registered office on its websites, and every page of this site carries a link to this one.

General correspondence goes to hello@bractonlegal.co.uk. Data protection questions go to dpo@bractonlegal.co.uk.

Privacy notice

Version 2.0 | Dated 20 August 2026

This notice explains what happens to personal data on this website. It is written to be read, not skimmed past, and it is short because the site collects little. It covers the website alone: what a law firm's clients' data receives inside the Bracton platform is governed by that firm's own privacy notice and by the written data processing agreement between the firm and us, not by this page.

Who we are

The controller of the personal data this website collects is Bracton Limited, registered in England and Wales as Bracton Ltd under company number 17360622, whose registered office is at Arden Hall, Brooklands Road, Sale, Cheshire M33 3SJ. We are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office as a data controller under registration number ZC227137. You reach us on 0161 563 0939, at dpo@bractonlegal.co.uk for anything concerning personal data, or by post to the registered office.

What we collect, and why

When you contact us, whether about the platform, a demonstration or anything else, we hold what you send: your name, your firm, how to reach you and what you wrote. We use it to answer you and, if the conversation continues, to carry it on. The lawful basis is our legitimate interest in responding to the people who write to us, and from the point a contract is in prospect, the steps needed to enter into it. Where you book a conversation through the site, the appointment is managed in Microsoft Bookings inside our own Microsoft 365 environment, Microsoft acting as our processor under its data protection addendum, and the booking holds your name, your contact details and anything you write in the message box.

The site itself takes measurements without identifying anyone. We use Umami, a measurement tool that counts visits and pages using no cookies and building no profile of you, so the counts tell us which pages earn their keep and nothing about who read them. There is no advertising on this site, no advertising cookies, and no tracking that follows you elsewhere.

Like every website, this one is delivered by a hosting service, and a server sees the technical detail any server sees: the network address your browser calls from, the page asked for and the moment it was asked. Our host is Netlify, which processes those server logs to deliver the pages and to defend the service against attack. Where that processing happens outside the United Kingdom it takes place under the safeguards data protection law requires for international transfers.

Cookies

This site sets no cookies. None for measurement, none for advertising, none at all. What it stores on your device is one thing only: the choices you make in the site's own cookie settings, reached from the small control on every page, including the off switch for measurement if you use it. That record exists solely to honour what you chose on your next visit, which is why the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations ask no consent for it, and why no banner interrupts you. The measurement itself stores nothing on your device and reads nothing from it. The full cookie policy sits below on this page.

What we do not do

We do not sell personal data, we do not share it for marketing, we do not profile visitors, and we make no decision about you by automated means. Nothing you send through this site is used to train any model.

Your right to object

Where we rely on legitimate interests, as we do to answer enquiries and to keep the service secure, you have the right to object at any time on grounds relating to your particular situation. Object by telephone, email or post to the contacts above, and we stop unless the law lets the processing continue and we tell you why. This paragraph stands on its own because the law says the right to object should be put to you plainly, not folded into a list.

How long we keep things

An enquiry that goes nowhere is deleted within two years of the last exchange. Where you become a client, what you sent joins the client record and follows our retention policy, and records the law requires us to keep, such as accounting records, are kept for the periods it sets. The site's measurements are aggregate from the start and hold nothing to delete about any one person.

Your rights

You have the rights UK data protection law gives you: to ask for a copy of what we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it erased, to restrict or object to its use, and to receive what you gave us in a portable form. Ask by telephone, by email to dpo@bractonlegal.co.uk or by post, and we answer within a month. You are never obliged to give this site any personal data at all: every page works without it. If you are unhappy with anything we have done with your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, by post at Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5AF, or by telephone on 0303 123 1113, though we would rather hear it from you first and put it right.

Changes

If this notice changes, the change appears on this page with a new date, and a change that matters is said plainly at the top rather than buried.

Cookie policy

Version 1.0 | Last updated: 6 August 2026

This policy applies to: this website and all related subdomains

This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, which cookies we use on our website, why we use them, and how you can control them. It should be read alongside our Privacy Policy, available in the Privacy notice on this page.

Bracton Ltd (company number 17360622) is the data controller for this website. Our registered office and business address is Arden Hall, Brooklands Road, Sale, M33 3SJ. For any question about cookies or your personal data, contact our data protection lead at dpo@bractonlegal.co.uk.

1. WHAT ARE COOKIES

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device (computer, tablet, or smartphone) when you visit a website. They allow the website to recognise your device on subsequent visits and to remember certain information about your preferences or actions.

Cookies are widely used to make websites function efficiently, to provide analytical information to website owners, and to deliver personalised content. Some cookies are essential for a website to work at all, and others are optional and require your consent before they are set.

Alongside cookies, we may also use similar technologies such as web beacons, pixel tags, and local storage. References to "cookies" in this policy include those similar technologies unless the context requires otherwise.

2. WHO SETS COOKIES ON OUR WEBSITE

Cookies on our website are set by two categories of party:

  • First-party cookies: set directly by Bracton Ltd in connection with the operation of our website.
  • Third-party cookies: set by third-party services that we use on our website, such as analytics providers. Those third parties control those cookies and are subject to their own privacy and cookie policies.

3. CATEGORIES OF COOKIES WE USE

We categorise the cookies on our website as follows. No banner appears when you arrive, because nothing on this site needs your consent before it runs. Category 2 is listed for completeness and has no control in the consent panel while we set no functional cookies. Category 3 stores nothing on your device and needs no consent, and the consent panel gives you a switch that turns it off. You may open the settings panel and change any choice at any time from the Manage cookies link in the footer of every page.

Category 1: Strictly Necessary

These keep the website working and cannot be switched off. The only item we hold in this category is a record of your cookie choice, stored in your browser's local storage so the banner does not reappear on every visit. We set no other strictly necessary cookies, and no consent is required for this under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR).

ItemProviderPurposeDuration
Cookie choice recordBracton LtdRemembers your cookie preference so the banner does not show againHeld locally until you clear your browser data

Category 2: Functional (requires consent)

We set no functional cookies at present. If we add a feature that needs one, we will list it here and ask for your consent first.

Category 3: Analytics and Performance (on by default, with an off switch)

We use Umami to see in aggregate how the site is used so we can improve it. Umami sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device and collects no personal data, which is why it can run without consent under PECR. It runs on every visit unless you turn the analytical switch off in the consent panel, and turning it off stops measurement of your visits entirely.

ItemProviderPurposeDuration

Category 4: Marketing and Targeting (requires consent)

We set no marketing or advertising cookies at present. If that changes, we will list them here and ask for your consent before any are set.

4. HOW TO MANAGE YOUR COOKIE PREFERENCES

You have several options for managing and controlling cookies:

Our cookie preference centre

No consent banner appears when you first visit, because the site sets no cookies that need one. The settings panel opens from the Manage cookies link in the footer of every page, and there you can accept all, reject all optional categories, or set your preferences by category, at any time.

Your browser settings

Most web browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. You can typically find these settings in the "Options", "Tools", or "Preferences" menu of your browser. The following links explain how to manage cookies in the most widely used browsers:

  • Google Chrome: support.google.com/chrome/answer/95647
  • Mozilla Firefox: support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enable-and-disable-cookies-website-preferences
  • Apple Safari: support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/safari/sfri11471/mac
  • Microsoft Edge: support.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/delete-cookies-in-microsoft-edge

Please note that restricting cookies may affect the functionality of our website. Blocking strictly necessary cookies in particular may prevent the website from working as intended.

Our analytics

Our analytics is cookieless and runs by default, and the analytical switch in the consent panel turns it off for your visits entirely, so there is nothing to opt out of through a third-party add-on. Use the Manage cookies link in the footer of any page to change your choice at any time.

Do Not Track

Some browsers include a "Do Not Track" feature that signals to websites that you do not wish to be tracked. There is currently no industry standard for how websites should respond to this signal, and our website does not currently respond to Do Not Track signals specifically. Our cookie preference centre provides a more reliable mechanism for controlling tracking on our site.

5. COOKIES AND CONSENT UNDER UK LAW

The use of cookies in the United Kingdom is regulated by the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR) as well as the UK GDPR. PECR requires that we obtain your prior consent before storing or accessing non-essential cookies on your device. Consent must be freely given, specific, informed, and unambiguous, and must be obtained before the cookies are set.

Strictly necessary cookies are exempt from this consent requirement. Functional and marketing cookies, if we ever set them, require your consent before they are activated. Our analytics sits outside the consent requirement because it neither stores anything on your device nor reads anything from it, and we give you an off switch for it regardless. We do not pre-tick consent boxes or use cookie walls (walls that prevent you from accessing the site unless you accept all cookies).

Where we rely on consent for cookies that also involve the processing of personal data, that consent also serves as the lawful basis for processing under Article 6(1)(a) UK GDPR. You may withdraw consent at any time through our cookie preference centre, and we will cease the relevant processing as soon as reasonably practicable.

6. THIRD-PARTY COOKIES AND EXTERNAL SERVICES

Some third-party services that we use, including social media sharing buttons and embedded content, may set cookies or use similar technologies. These are controlled by those third parties and subject to their own privacy and cookie policies. We recommend reviewing those policies directly:

  • LinkedIn: linkedin.com/legal/cookie-policy
  • Umami, which measures site usage without cookies or personal data: umami.is/privacy

We do not control these third-party cookies and accept no responsibility for them. The inclusion of a third-party service on our website does not constitute an endorsement of that third party's privacy practices.

7. UPDATES TO THIS POLICY

We update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use, changes in applicable law, or for operational reasons. When we update this policy, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top. Where changes are material, we will refresh the consent banner on our website so that you are given a fresh opportunity to review and update your preferences. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.

Modern slavery, artificial intelligence and the environment

These three were rewritten as policies in their own right and moved. Each is set out in full and each is downloadable.

The modern slavery statement, which explains why a company of this size is not required to publish one and publishes anyway.

The artificial intelligence policy, covering what leaves your firm, what a person has to approve and what is recorded.

The environment policy, on the emissions the company creates and the electricity the overnight work consumes.

All seven policies are listed together.
